There have been a rise in complaints that Baltimore police officers use excessive force too frequently. In response, the Baltimore Police Department will implement new strategies to try and combat the growing problem. According to the BPD, officers will be taught to emphasize “sanctity of life.” They will do so in two ways: by stressing de-escalation and by requiring officers who witness excessive force to intervene.
Some believe these techniques should already be built into every cop’s training. The fact that Baltimore has acknowledged the problem and proposed a solution to fix it is a big step. Whether you believe police officers regularly use excessive force or not, there’s no denying this announcement could cool over feelings some Baltimore citizens feel for their police force. After all, the first step towards fixing a problem is to acknowledge it exists. Hopefully this decision will lead to positive results and other police forces across our nation can follow suit.
